Our two vacation homes sit in a quiet, oak-shaded corner of Southwest Austin (78749) — close enough to be downtown in about 12 minutes, yet right on the doorstep of the Texas Hill Country. Here's how guests spend their days.
Get outside on the greenbelt & the water
Austin is built for the outdoors, and some of the best of it is minutes away.
- Barton Creek Greenbelt — miles of hiking, swimming holes, and bouldering, with trailheads a short drive from the house.
- Barton Springs Pool & Zilker Park — a spring-fed pool that stays around 70°F year-round, plus open lawns and the Zilker Botanical Garden (about 15 minutes).
- Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail — a 10-mile loop along the water with skyline views; rent kayaks or paddleboards downtown.
- Mount Bonnell — a quick climb to the best sunset view over the city and the Colorado River.
Eat & drink like a local
You're close to some of Austin's most-loved food and drink.
- South Congress (SoCo) — boutiques, rooftop bars, food trucks, and the famous "i love you so much" mural.
- Austin barbecue — legendary smoked brisket is a rite of passage; you're a short drive from several of the city's best.
- Breweries & food-truck parks — Southwest Austin and nearby Dripping Springs are full of relaxed patios and craft taprooms.
Live music & nightlife
It's the Live Music Capital of the World for a reason. Downtown's Rainey Street and Sixth Street are about 15–20 minutes away, and the city's calendar is packed with shows year-round — plus marquee festivals like ACL and SXSW.
Hill Country day trips
One of the biggest perks of staying on the southwest side: you're already pointed toward wine country.
- Dripping Springs — wineries, distilleries, and breweries, plus popular wedding venues, roughly 20–30 minutes west.
- Hamilton Pool Preserve & Jacob's Well — iconic natural swimming spots (reservations recommended in season).
- Wimberley & the wineries of US-290 — a classic Texas Hill Country wine-trail day.
Great for families
Both homes are family-friendly, with easy access to kid-favorite spots like the Thinkery children's museum, the Austin Zoo, and splash-friendly parks — plus yard games and space to roam back at the house.
